My teaching philosophy is to have my classroom be interactive and rewarding for students. I want students to walk away from my classroom not only gaining the factual knowledge needed to succeed but knowledge on how those facts are expressed, related or can be used in the real world or life situations beyond the classroom. I want students to be able to physically show their knowledge have creativity in the classroom and be proud of their work. My classroom will be a productive and safe environment for students to grow and learn.
As a teacher I want students to enjoy coming to my class. I know that not all students will come in loving science, but I want them to learn and understand science in a fun and rewarding way. I want to be a fun teacher. I want students to not think I am there and teaching them all these concepts because I have to but because I want to. Students should think that I enjoy everything that I am doing and I want to do everything in my power to help them succeed. I believe one of the aspects that make the field of biology so interesting is the personal connections that you can make with the knowledge learned. Students will gain knowledge on new concepts in the classroom but they will also make connections with that knowledge that is learned. Students can really relate to different topics by linking them to their life specifically or just other life connections. I think that having this link with concepts and life connections is important. Students become more interested in the things they are learning. Students can form opinions and express their likes and dislikes on specific topics. I want students to understand how the field of biology can affect their everyday lives. These concepts will help students think critically about science and its effects on life.
In my classroom students will be able to express their knowledge in a variety of ways. I am a strong believer that all students need to have the opportunity to express their knowledge learned in a way that fits them. Students will be assessed in ways that involve reading and writing, speaking, and being creative. I think that being creative can range from art in the classroom to writing. No matter the task at hand I want students to be proud of their work that is produced. I do not want students to think they cannot do something because they are not good at it. I want students to try their hardest and put their best effort forth. I want students to show me what they have learned rather than me telling them what to learn all the time. Giving creativity in the classroom students can do just that. They can show and link their knowledge in ways that they want to. This will help engage the classroom as well as provide a happy environment. Linked to this I also want to give students an opportunity to learn in a variety of ways. This included lectures, readings, labs, hands on and creative activities.
Lastly, my classroom will be a productive and safe environment. Yes I want my classroom to be fun but it will be in a productive way. Students will always be doing productive work that is positive toward their field of learning. Students will know their expectations in the classroom. My classroom will be a safe environment. Student will be able to express their opinions and others will respect them for their opinions. There will be mutual respect between the students and me and amongst the students as well. I want students to enjoy and not feel scared of coming into my classroom everyday.
I know that my teaching philosophy is a rough draft and it is going to take years of experience to prefect it. As a teacher I will have patience and understanding towards my students. I think that in my beginning years having this starting point will help me in becoming a successful teacher. I think that linking real life examples, creativity and productivity in the classroom can provide for successful learning outcomes. With all of this providing a safe learning environment for students will show the importance of respect inside and outside the classroom. I want students to at the end of the year feel accomplished and successful in the science field. They do not have to love science at the end of the year but I want them to have a new respect and postive thinking toward the field of study
